Carla Yewman
Art Trust Subject Leader
I joined Hook Primary School in 2014 and haven’t looked back! I love the variety, challenges and reward that the role brings. Having a background in Art, I really appreciate the role of Art Lead for the Trust as I am passionate about the importance of Art for children; not only for supporting their well-being but for its ability to allow all children express themselves and to feel pride in what they’ve done.
A bit of background about me:
While studying English Literature at Newcastle University I fell in love with the city and ended up staying there for ten years in total. During that time I completed the Graduate Scheme with Marks and Spencers (and subsequently put on about a stone with all the delicious, reduced-priced food!). I then worked as a TA for a year, completed a PGCE and got a job as a Year 2 teacher in the West End of Newcastle, where 90% of the children had EAL – quite a different catchment to Hook!
After two years teaching at Canning Street, I then travelled round South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand for a year with my partner. Whilst travelling, I was lucky enough to find out about (and eventually secure) a position at Hook Primary School and had an informal discussion about the role whilst sat in the common room of a youth hostel on a pay phone – it all felt quite surreal!
I love being back in Yorkshire (I’m originally from Snaith) and I love the people I work with. My home life has also change quite dramatically since my Newcastle days; since starting at the school I’ve had two lovely little boys – Joel and Jesse (who now each have a guinea pig each – Flowers and Cheeky Monkey). We enjoy spending the weekends out and about and like to go camping as often as possible. I’ve also joined Viking Striders Running Club and even managed to get back up to Newcastle for the Great North Run in September.
I have always enjoyed and appreciated art and chose to study it at both GCSE and A-Level. When I’m organised enough I paint and make birthday cards (however kids clubs and life can often get in the way of this!).
If anyone would like any support with their Art curriculum or has any questions, please email me and I’ll support in any way I can. It would be fantastic to run a collaborative, whole-trust project in the future!
